In 1951, a contract was granted to Ford Motor Co. to develop a Military Utility Tactical Truck. The vehicles were issued to the military with the designation of M151. Due to the swing-axle type suspension and lack of body tilt on cornering, the M151 had a tendency to oversteer and roll when cornered too aggressively. Despite a reputation of being unsafe, the M151 established a record of reliability and proven performance over a wide range of operational areas, suited for multiple roles and applications.
